What does it mean

to think Sociologically?

Ariana Chan

thinking sociologically

?

Thinking sociologically means having the ability to look at a situation from a broader perspective.

To think sociologically, we must surpass what we think it’s common sense.

...

By questioning our knowledge, we can find different interpretations about a situation instead of conforming with what we think it's true

Sociological imagination in a nutshell...

?

a further explanation...

  • Our individual experiences are a cause of historical context.
  • It is helpful to understand social life from a broader context, freeing ourselves from thinking that our personal troubles are unique, instead we look at personal troubles as part of pubic issues.

Example: Monogamy

?

  • Our views in love and marriage vary from culture to culture
  • For us, a “normal” relationship consists of two individuals. This can be a sexual relationship or marriage which involves a singular, permanent partner.

...

This is “normal” in our culture because it is what we are used to.

Because we haven't been showed anything else about relationships, polynogamy would be considered unnaceptable in the american culture

in our culture, relationships are socially contructed

?

  • This means that our view of relationships are based on a subjective reality.
  • We have our own meaning of how relationships work

Love was not associated with marriage until it was shaped by social and historical influences...

?

...

having the ability to think sociologically helps us escape from socially contruscted concepts.

!

note to self (and whoever needs to be reminded)

think outside the box, live freely, and don't depend on the rules of society.
