Amazing Athletes: Deaf Soccer
Almost everyone in the world loves soccer. Some of these people are deaf. But deaf people want to play soccer, too! So there are leagues for deaf players.

History
Deaf soccer began in Great Britain. The Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club was the first in the world. It started in 1871. That’s before Manchester United became a team! But in the U.S., deaf soccer started in 1965.
Who Can Play
Players must be almost deaf to be in a deaf soccer league. They must only be able to hear sounds louder than normal speaking. Also, players must take out their hearing aids when they play. They have to play without any hearing help.

How to Play
Deaf soccer is different from other soccer games. First, referees do not blow whistles. They wave colorful flags. The players see the flags and play. Players communicate with each other using sign language. Coaches may write on a board for players to read. Some players cannot hear the loud cheering, so they look at the crowd. They gain energy from the crowd’s excited faces.
