Ocean Exploration Begins

50000 B.C. - 1 B.C,

This is important because it marks the beginning of the exploration era. If they had not started then, it would have taken longer to create the technology needed to explore later.

Deep Diving

1601 - 1800

In 1601, they first developed diving suits and helmets, This allowed humans to research and explore more than just the surface of the ocean. These suits are the trial and error for the next suits.

First Scuba

1801 - 1900

The advancements made in this time were very important and created a new look on the ocean exploration movement.

Discovery of the Continental Shelf

1849

The discovery of the continental shelf ending and continental slope beginning was huge and allowed for researchers to later on discover new species that lived down there.

Ocean Life 4,389 Meters Down

1868

When Charles Thomson found life this deep, it broke down the myth that life couldn't exist below 549 meters. This is extremely important because it showed just how little scientists knew about the ocean.

Early Marine Survey of the Americas

While the survey didn't get all the species living there, it was still a huge breakthrough on the abundance of ocean life that still needed to be discovered.

1872

Mapping the Ocean Floor

1925

Echo sounding equipment allowed a German vessel to discover new information about the structure of the ocean floor. This is important because it made researchers rethink how they thought deep ocean life worked.

Humans Down 923 Meters

1934

William Beebe and Otis Barton pioneered manned exploration of the ocean. This is incredibly low and shows the advancement in underwater vehicles used to explore.

Discovery of Hydrothermal Vents

1977

Before this discovery, we did not think an entire ecosystem was possible without sunlight. This was a huge breakthrough in deep underwater life.

Solo Dive to the Mariana Trench

2012

Though people had gone down there in 1960, this was the first time it had been done on a solo mission. This is one of the most important places to search because so much life could be hiding from humans in the deep sea where there is little to no light. They were able to find more species to learn about ocean life.
