What is a fear appeal?

Fear Appeals

Fear appeals are used in the media to scare people about everyday situations by implying that something negative or outrageous is going to happen during particualr situations.

A fear appeal describes a threat, indicates that audience members are likely to experience the threat, and indicates that one way audience members can avoid the threat is by adopting the message of the persuader.

  • Putwain, Symes, and Wilkinson found that challenge appraisal was more positively affective, while threat and fear appeal dug up anxiety and negative emotions.
