Slavery comes to North America

In August of 1619, it was recoded that hundreds of thousands African were kidnapped and forced to become slaves.

Born on December 8,1765 Eli created the well known cotton gin that would greatly speed up the cotton process by removing seeds from the cotton fiber.

Nat Turner's Revolt

August 1831

Nat Turner's Revolt was a slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County . In August 1831 it was led by Nat Turner. Rebel slaves were killing from 55 to 65 people. He hid for 6 weeks and was hung with 16 of his followers.

Dred Scott

In 1857, Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom, he was told he was not a citizen and had no legal rights to vote.

One night John Brown led less then 50 men into a raid , his men and several blacks were captured. John Brown was later hung on December 2, 1859.

The Jim Crow's were people who painted their faces black to entertain others, it lasted for 100 years. Later on it was made a law that if you attempted to break the the jim crow law then you would be arrested, fined or sentenced death.

In 1896 the Plessy v. Ferguson case made it to the supreme court. It was made a law that in Louisiana that segregation was upheld of passengers in a railroad car.

Washington, Carver, and DuBois → 1900s

When the 19th century ended segregation had gotten stronger. in 1940 the DuBois had become the leading voices in the growing black protest movements, and Washington, Carver had little interest in racial politics.

NAACP founded → February 12, 1909

NAACP, National Association for the advanced colored people, took place in the early 1900s and is Americas largest civil right movement. Their goal was to expand and abolish all forced segregation.

Marcus Garvey / UNIA → 1916

Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica and later on in life became a nationalist leader. According to Marcus their only hope was fleeing America anf going back to Africa. UNIA, his empire of Africa, had 500,000 members.

In 1920 the migration on blacks had sparked a African American culture that took its name from new york and were known as the Negro movement and the Black Renaissance.

The great depression was a time period where many of people became poor and went homeless, Banks were closing their doors and businesses were going down hill because people couldn't afford much.

World war 2 was the biggest and deadliest war that involved more than 30 countries and lasted for more than 6 years.

Emmett was a 14 year old boy who was murdered because he was being accused of harassing a white female.

Rosa Parks was a 42 year old african american female who refused to sit in the back of a segregated bus because she was already was in the spot and the white male wanted her to move.

Central High School integration / Little Rock Nine → September 1957

In September of 1957, 9 black students entered a all white Central High school in little rock Arkansas. Weeks before the governor had the school surrounded with troops to prevent federal racial integration.

Sit-In Movement & Founding of SNCC → 1960

In 1960, four black students from the Agricultural and Technical College in California were offered coffee and rejected the offer because the whites only policy. Later on there was the sit-in movement because blacks wanted to be able to have the same as whites.

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech which was called the i have a dream speech. Martin had expressed his feelings toward black violence and faith that one day white's and blacks come together as equals.

In the summer of 1964, CORE had made white students from the north travel to Mississippi so that they could help register black voters and build schools for black children.

In 1964, the civil rights act had become very serious in the united states. Later on John F.Kennedy had passed the new civil rights legislation. when he decided to pass this he had 70 percent of the African American vote.

In March of 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. had made a effort to register black voters. On the 7 of march marchers got as far as the Edmund Pettis Bridge where they were attacked by state troopers with whips, nightsticks and tear gas.

In 1952, Malcolm Little was released from prison after serving 6 years on a robbery charge. He later on became the influence of NOI. He felt the need to encourage disadvantage black people who needed help with their confidence.

On April 4, of 1968 Mather Luther King Jr. was shot/assassinated on a balcony in Memphis . In a span of 7 day 100 cities had burning and looting because of his death. The male who killed Martin Luther King was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
