Reflection is when waves bounce off a surface. If a surface is flat, the angle at which the wave hits the surface will be the same as the angle at which it leaves the angle, which is called the angle of incidence. This is known as the law of reflection.
What is refraction and how does it happen?
Refraction of Light
One of the properties of a wave is that they are able to bend. This happens when a wave enters a new medium and its speed changes. The amount of bending depends on the medium it is entering.
Diffraction is the bending of waves around an object. The amount of bending depends on the size of the obstacle and the size of the waves.
Large obstacle, small wavelength= low diffraction
Small obstacle, large wavelength= large diffraction
Thanks to Sir Issac Newton, we know that visible light is actually made up of many different colors. When a prism is held up and a ray of light goes through the prism, the colors are dispersed and the colors of the rainbow are visible. This is dispersion of light.
