1534 - First Voyage

What Happened?

In 1534, explorer Jacques Cartier convinced French monarch Francis I, to fund the first voyage expediction to North America. Jacques found himself at the mouth of the St. Lawrence where he encountered Iroquois people.

Why was this Significant?

This is signifaicant because Jacques placed a cross on Gaspe pensinsula, meaning he claimed this land for France. He also formed a relationship with Cheif Donaconna.

1535 - Second Voyage

What Happened?

This was now Jacques second voyage up the St. Lawrence River, where he found himself at the village of Stadacona. There was an outbreak of scurvy in the winter and European diseases, leading to the death of the First People as they were not immune to these.

Why was this Significant?

Jacques ruined his relationship with the FIrst People ashe captured Cheif Donnacona and other leads, holding them captive trying to gain information for their next voyage.

1541 - French Settlement

What Happened?

This was now Jacques final voyage. He brought cattle and supplies with him to form a settlement. He also planted crops in hopes of residing there.

Jacques later returned to France and abandoned efforts of colonization.

Why was this Significant?

This was the first attemp of colonization of the French people on new lands.

It also helped shape our land today.

1604 to 1642 - King and Champlian

What Happened?

1604 - King Henri IV created a company to find wealth in North America. The head of the company was Pierre du Gua de Monts. Brought along cartographer/geographer, Samuel de Champlain. Established a colony at lle Ste. Croix

1605 - They moved the colony to Port Royal

1607 - Monopoly revoked and Port Royal abandoned

1608 - Moved to an abandoned Stadaconian village.

1642 - Under the leadership of Paul de Chomedy de Maissonneuve, Quebec colonists helped missionaries from Ville-Marie.

Why was this Significant?

This was important to French expansion,

Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec which is

one of the oldest cities in Canada.

1604- 1642

1610 - Hudson's Voyage

What Happened?

Henry Hudson set sail and discovered Hudson Bay in 1610. He was swept into the tides where is now know as Hudson's Strait.

Why was this Significant?

This is significant because it laid the groundwork for the Frenfch to later use to colonize.

Hudson's Bay Company was also founded thanks to Henry, hwich later led to fur trading.

1616 - Champlain Returns

What Happened?

Samuel de Champlain returned to New France with a map, which he later releases and shows to the public. This was an engraved map of New France and some outer parts North America.

Why was this Significant?

This is significant because it later helped other explorers the route on how to return to France after their voyage. Also helped to settle North America.

1654 - Hudson's Bay Company

What Happened?

Medard Chouart Des Grousilliers and Pierre Esprit Radisson travelled from Quebec to the interior of New France. They built trading posts at Lake Superior and planned to set up a more to reduce the cost of transporting back to Europe.

Why was this Significant?

This was significant for New France because the fur trades were the most important industry.

This incouraged trade and helped run the country.

1713 - Treaty of Utrecht

What Happened?

The treaty of Utrecht ended the war between France and Britian. The French was forced to surrender all possesions of Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Acadia to Britian. The treaty forced the French colonists to pledge allegiance to Britian and the Acadians were stuck between the French and British forces.

Why was this Significant?

This was important to New France because all French forts in the Northwest were surrendered to the British, France agreed to restore the entire drainage basin of Hudson Bay to Britian and paid Hudson Bay company for the losses suffered during the war.

1756 - Seven Years War

What Happened?

1756 marked the beginning of the Seven Years War between the French and the British, in both Europe and North America. British won and took New France from the French.

Why was this Significant?

This war led to the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

1763 - The Treaty of Paris

What Happened?

The treaty of Paris was signed in February of 1763, which led to the ending of the Seven Years' War between France, Britian, and Spain. It marked the end of the war in North America and created the start for the modern country of Canada.

Why was this Significant?

This is significant because it was the ending of the war.

New France belonged to the British.

Britian added Florida to their colony.

Fur trade became free from all.
