gifted early readers

Characteristics of gifted early readers

1. Have advanced vocabularies.

2. are self-taught

3. reach fluency earlier

  • children can be taught to memorize words at an early age.
  • reading comprehension can not be taught until a child's brain is developed.
  • this development generally does not happen until around 3rd grade. therefore, a child who reads well earlier than five is gifted.

Giftedness in Middle schoolers

Middle Schoolers are more likely to prefer perceptual, kinesthetic, and tactile learning over auditory learning. Visual modalities develop during adolescence. The research seems to suggest that auditory learning develops last (Griggs and Price, 1980).

This may explain why young children will demonstrate giftedness through early mobility over linguistic ability.
