Toasting 101

What A Toast Is Supposed to Be

What is a Toast Supposed to be?

A toast is a blessing that is spoken over someone, usually on a special occasion. It encompasses what you wish for the person or people along with a few reasons why the person or people are important to you.

A Toast Is Not...

What a Toast Is Not Supposed to Be

  • An opportunity to embarrass someone

  • A comedy routine (though it might be funny sometimes)

  • Meant solely for entertainment

  • About the person giving the toast

Intro

Introducing Yourself and Your Theme

  • Thank everyone for being there
  • Say how you know the person you are toasting
  • The very next thing after the introduction should be a sentence about the theme of the speech.

Toasts Should Have Themes!!!

  • The theme could be broad
  • Love conquers all
  • Family is everything
  • Friendship is magic

  • The theme could be anything, but the most important thing is that the theme is there! Pick one and choose a couple of fun stories that illustrate the theme.

Theme

Humor at the beginning, Sincerity at the end

Stories

  • Everybody loves a funny story during a toast, but here are a few cautions:
  • The stories should be ones that everyone can laugh at (including the person being toasted.)
  • Err on the side of one sincere or heartfelt story for every two funny ones.
  • Sincerity is what everyone will remember and what will make the toast a happy moment rather than a cringe-worthy one.

End by Restating Your Theme and Saying a Blessing

  • A simple restatement of the theme you built your speech around is a good lead in to the blessing and the actual toasting part of the toast.
  • Direct everyone to raise their glasses
  • Say a blessing over the person.
  • Here are some old blessings you can use: http://tacomaweekly.tripod.com/Irish-Quotations.html
  • You can also write your own in the same style
  • Say "To (Name of the person you're toasting)," raise your glass, and take a drink of it.
