Peers & Media
During practices our basketball team says terms such as “Pull up”, “You bet” and “Nothing but net.” The media influences our language by the posts we see from professional basketball players such as Elena Delle Donne uses slang within the basketball culture like “She got game”.
Peers and Media- During practices our basketball team says terms such as “Pull up”, “You bet” and “Nothing but net.” The media influences our language by the posts we see from professional basketball players such as Elena Delledonne uses slang within the basketball culture like “She got game”.
Peers & Media
Our peers influence the clothes that we wear during basketball season because we all dress the same. The typical outfit consists of sweat pants and leggings with a sweatshirt. Media influences our clothing choices based on professional basketball players and we want to look like they do and wear what they do.
Ex: Basketball shorts, baggy tshirts, sweats, sweatshirts.
Peers & Coaches
Our coaches influence our decisions by trying to get us to eat healthier and stop drinking pop. We all eat concession stand food after games because we are really hungry from playing and this is the only food available.
Ex: A lot of food, pasta, concession stand food, water, and pickles.
Coaches & Family
As basketball players, we want to show out when we play and this is based on the goals that are set by our coaches and family. Our family wants us to succeed so we try our best to reach the goals that we have set for the season.
Ex: Staying healthy, stats, attitude, team player, awards, and season success.
Peers & Coaches
During basketball season, as players, we complain about running and being tired and sore. This becomes a behavioral norm with the girls on the basketball team.
Ex: Tired, complaining about running, game planning, warm ups, rap music, rolling shorts, dress up on game day, and having hair up.

Peers- high school students are socialized into fitting in with their peers. They are pressured into how to dress to behave normally.
Family- family will teach a student what is socially acceptable to wear in public based off what is acceptable for their values.
-Parties
-Going to hang out with friends
-Social Gatherings in barns or houses
Peers- students will learn from their peers on how to party and socialize correctly
Media- movies and television shows depict high schooler as being a socially normal time to party.
Slang words
- sup

Peers- friends teach others what to say in order to become popular. They become normalized into speaking that way because of who they are around.
Education- students learn from their teachers their language and what is acceptable to say. For example, a teacher will become angry if a student uses incorrect grammar.
High school students are often on their technology and will feel limited if it is not up to date.
-having the latest iphone
-getting a smart watch when uneccessary
-spending money for expensive accessories to appear cool, ex:airpods
Media- students learn through media the importance of having the latest technology
Peers- it becomes socially normal for high schoolers to have the same or recent technology their peers have. More specifically, when apple watches became popular more students bought them, even if they don’t have a need for one.
Students can choose to value their education and homework over going to parties with friends in order to appear “cool”
-using correct manners and peaking when talking to adults or teachers
-valueing time with friends over homework
-valueing their outward appearance and appearance on social media
Family- family will teach their children what is acceptable to do and participate in and what is not. For example a parent may ground their child to prevent them from going to parties if their grades fall.
Religious groups- religious groups will teach students what is and what is not acceptable. For example, in our schools BAY youth group claims building strong relationships is considered a positive thing for high schoolers to do.
Different ages of socializatin act differntly upon different people. Mackenzie and I fit into the basketball culture and baxter high school culture because we relate to both. Morgan only fit into the baxter high school cultue because she was only socialized into that one only. However, it is easy to fit into both cultures. Kenzie and Maddie can easily live both cultures based on their interests and things the cultures overlap in. For example, both basketball slang and teenage slang would include words like sup and hang out. Through our family we are socialized into different cultures due to the things and people we interact with.
