Guilt Comparison by Nathan Jones

Claudius vs John Wilkes Booth

Claudius's Guilt

Claudius

In Hamlet, Claudius feels a great amount of guilt due to him murdering his brother. Claudius said, "May one be pardoned and retain th' offense?" This shows that although his guilt is terrible, he still wishes to keep his rewards of murdering his brother. It also demonstrates how Claudius does not know if he will be forgiven through his prayers to God, because he is still benefiting from his sin.

Booth's Guilt

Booth

John Wilkes Booth is infamous for the murder of President Abraham Lincoln. In his final diary entry, he describes his thoughts about the situation he has caused. He primarily discusses the reasoning for his actions and possible doubts for the reasoning itself. He wrote: “Our country owed all her troubles to him, and God simply made me the instrument of his punishment.” This shows that he believes that he did what was right for his country and God.

Comparison

These two individuals are similar in the sense that they both committed murder. They vary in reason; Claudius did it for self gain, but Booth did it for doing what he thought was necessary for his country. The guilt is far more noticeable in Claudius, because he recognizes that what he did is truly a sin as indicated in the first slide. Booth said: “This last was not a wrong, unless God deems it so, and it’s with Him to damn or bless me.” This shows that Booth believes that he has not done something wrong, and that the only person to convince him otherwise is God.

What about God?

Religion

Both murderers thought of God after the crime that they each committed. They each thought differently about God based on how if they concieved their actions to be a sin. "My fault is past. But oh, what form of prayer can serve my turn, Forgive me my foul murder?" (Claudius) This demonstrates that he prayed to God because he thought that he was truly guilty. On the other hand, Booth thought that he acted accordingly to do what was right for his country and thus wasn't guilty. Booth believed that God could be the only person to determine if he was truly guilty.

Modern Example of Guilt

Guilty

Steven Dean Gordon "begged" for the death penalty after committing several murders during 2013 and 2014. Gordon spoke publicly about his murders for the first time in a creepy interview with Keith Morrison of NBC's "Dateline," and revealed the moment he finally felt heavy regret for the crimes he committed.

Modern Absence of Guilt

Not Guilty

Kyle Rittenhouse is a 17-year-old who was charged with fatally shooting two protesters and injuring a third during summer unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He told The Washington Post that he does not regret having an assault-style rifle on his person on the night of Aug. 25.
