Fernand Mondego

The Importance of Others

Fernand does not regard "the other" as stepping stones in order to achieve his end goals. He feels that others, including Edmond, are below him and don't matter. Because of his birthright, Fernand treats others like trash and does not care about their wellbeing or needs. He is a selfish sinner, who was willing to fall so far to be happy, yet he never was.

The Importance of Having a Direction in Life

Power and wealth are the only things Fernand held dear to him. He was willing to make horrible decisions to meet his goals. Fernand killed and lied, yet he was still empty. This man does not value any kind of companionship and shows no love for others. Fernand wanted what he couldn't have and went to great deals to make sure he got it.

The Importance of Having a Direction in Life

Fernand's identity is based around his selfishness and over confidence. His identity also revolves around persistence and passion. Fernand demonstrates these characteristics in his quest for power, wealth, and happiness. Fernand strives to gain more than he had and made all the wrong choices. He was not loyal to humanity, only to himself. His ethics are askewed because of the immoral actions he takes against his best friend and others.

Use of Language

Fernand's use of language is centered around his own desire for power and wealth. He says many things about how unhappy his is and proves his selfishness by sending his best friend, Edmond, to jail and taking everything that Edmond held dear. Yet, he still was not happy with his life. Fernand has lived a privileged life and has everything he has ever wanted, but Fernand still does not speak about others or does he care for others. His speech continues to be focused on himself and his selfish deeds. Fernand is bitter that his best friend a commoner had everything and was content with his life while Fernand was noble but was still discontent.

His Actions are Embodied.

Fernand's actions reveal him to be sly, selfish and horrid character, he uses immoral means to get his way by throwing his best friend in prison and taking what was rightfully Edmond's. Fernand's spirit is extremely jealous driven and bitter and is demonstrated in his actions. He was resentful that Edmond was happy even though he did not possess the amount of money Fernand has, he is also bitter at the fact that Mercedez loves Edmond rather than Fernand. Due to these characteristics Fernand goes behind his best friend's back ruining their friendship and stabbing him in the back just because Fernand was envious and bitter.

Symptoms of Misinformed Conscience

Fernand responds to the symptom: The end justifies the immoral means, because his quest for happiness and authority was filled with evil choices. These choices brought about his bankruptcy and ultimately his death. Fernand promotes this symptom of a misinformed conscience by breaking the ten commandments and only thinking about his end goal not caring about how he hill achieve it.

Capacity, Process, and Judgment

Capacity, Process, and Judgment

Fernand's very misguided and ignores the meaning of right and wrong. Conscience as capacity is not present here. Fernand knows the right and wrong choices but chooses to ignore his conscience in favour of temptation. Conscience is process is tilted in the wrong way and drives Fernand's immoral decisions. Finally, Fernand's decisions he makes are ethically askew and therefore his conscience is judgment is acted in the wrong way . Ultimately Fernand dies a lonely, and worthless death since he ignored his conscience and chooses to go down an evil path.
