Only humans can create/have culture. Plants and animals cannot have “Robotics” culture. Culture must be created and followed by humans and only humans.
Cultures have different sets of meanings and values about the way things should be done. They also have ways of doing things that aren't conventional.
Robotics culture has something we call “Gracious Professionalism” which is one of our core values, that dictate how we treat others. "Roboteers” are also trained in something we call “pre- build season” to get them ready for build season, by reviewing tools and how to use them.
We have different sub groups ex. Mechanical, controls, Business, Outreach, Awards.
Culture is not hidden, because culture is centered around community
Robotics creates a community in the different teams that are involved and the competitions that bring these teams together.
Robotics helps teams work together by allowing them to compete at tournaments together in their alliances. This teaches teams to work alongside each other.
Many of the ways that we have of doing things are inherited from parents or ancestors, these are called traditions
A robotics tradition would be our many dances during competitions, these would include the cotton eyed Joe, Macarena, and the YMCA.
Another tradition is our annual Bag n Tag, which is done every year at the end of build season. We also hold our end of the year dinner where talk about our accomplishments throughout the year.
Because these ways of doing things is come from tradition, we feel we have a duty to keep them
We hold robotics meeting every Tuesday and Thursday to make sure that students are still engaged in robotics.
When ways of doing things becomes established, a system of organizing these ways of doing things is established
FIRST is the organization that founded and helps fund robotics and all the teams in it
The ways we do things are a source of cultural identity. They set us apart from other cultures.
Our team branding, which is all rainbow, sets us apart from other teams on the field. Jerseys set people apart from other teams as well.
Team cheers and rituals on the field also set teams apart.
