INTRO

When you read my website, you will learn about how the rock cycle works, and the rocks that make up the rock cycle. When your done reading, you'll be a rock cycle master.

The Rock Cycle is a continuous process where rocks are formed, changed to one rock to another, destroyed, and then formed again.

Igneous Rock

Forming igneous rock is the first process in the rock cycle. You can find molten materials down below the Earth's crust. Molten material is usually subjected to pressure and high temperatures. Because of this, the molten materials get erupted out of an volcano, so igneous rock forms when volcanoes erupt, spilling magma everywhere. When the magma cools, it forms igneous rock.

There are two groups of igneous rock, intrusive and extrusive.

Instrusive igneous rocks crystallize below Earth's surface, and it cools very slowly allowing large crystals to form. Examples of instrusive igneous are diorite, gabbro, granite, pegamatite, and periodotite.

Extrusive igneous rocks erupt onto the surface, and cools quickly allowing small crystals to form. Examples of extrusive igneous rock are andesite, basalt, odsidian, pumice, rhyolite, scoria, and tuff.

Sedimentary Rock

Sedimentary rock is formed when sand,mud and pebbles get deposited in layers. Overtime, these layers get squashed under more and more layers. Finally, the layers are lithified - turned into a rock. Sedimentary rock can be found in deserts, lakes, rivers,and seas.

Clastic sedimentary rock are formed from mechanical weathering debris. Examples of clastic rocks are breccia, conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale.

Chemical sedimentary rocks are formed when dissolved materials precipitate from solution. Examples of chemical sedimentary rock are rock salt, iron, ore, chert, flint, some dolomites, and some limestones

Organic sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation of plant or animal debris. Some examples of organic sedimentary rocks are coal, some dolomiites, and some limestones.

Metamorphic rock is formed from other rocks. These rocks form when sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks have undergone changes as a result of extreme heat and pressure. Because of the physical pressure and temperature, it alters the mineral composition and the texture of the pre-excisting igneous and sedimentary rocks for a metamorphic rock.

*Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock limestone. *Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock sandstone. *Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock mudstone. *Granulite is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the igneous rock basalt

There are two main types of metamorphic rock. They are foliated metamorphic rock and non-foliated metamorphic rock. Foliated metamorphics rocks are formed from direct exposure to heat and pressure. This type has four distinguishable types of aligned texture and they usually have a banded or layered appearance. Some examples of foliated metamorphic rocks are slate, gniess, phyllite, and schist. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks do not have a layered or banded appearance. Some examples of this type are marble, quartzite,, hornels, and novaculite.
