Identifies the key principles and concepts of the nursing practice

Introduction

Facilitates description but is not capable of research verification

Present a conceptual framework

Broad and complex in shape

Roy's Adaptation Model (RAM) was developed by Sr.Callista Roy.

The model presents the person as a holistic adaptive system in constant interaction with the external and internal environment. The main task of the human system is to maintain integrity in the face of environmental stimuli. The goal of nursing is to foster successful adaptation.

According to RAM, nursing process is a problem solving approach for gathering data, identifying the capacities and needs of the human adaptive system, selecting and implementing approaches for nursing care, and evaluation the outcome of care provided.

The Roy Adaptation Model

Assessment

Assessment of stimuli-the first step of the nursing process which involves gathering data about the behavior of the person as an adaptive system in each of the adaptive modes.

Assessment of stimuli-the second step of the nursing process which involves the identification of internal and external stimuli that are influencing the person’s adaptive behaviors

Nursing Diagnosis- step three of the nursing process which involves the formulation of statements that interpret data about the adaptation status of the person, including the behavior and most relevant stimuli

Nursing Diagnosis

Goal Setting-the fourth step of the nursing process which involves the establishment of clear statements of the behavioral outcomes for nursing care.

Goal Setting

Intervention-the fifth step of the nursing process which involves the determination of how best to assist the person in attaining the established goals

Intervention

Evaluation

Evaluation

The sixth and final step of the nursing process which involves judging the effectiveness of the nursing intervention in relation to the behavior after the nursing intervention in comparison with the goal established.

1. How can we as nurses use the Roy Adaptation model in our profession

2. What is your greatest accomplishment as a nurse?

Question

Human caring involves:

Values

Commitment

Knowledge

Caring Actions

Consequences

Theory of Human Caring

The theory is focused on "centrality of human caring and on the

caring -to-caring transpersonal relationship and its healing potential for both the one who is caring and the one who is being cared" f( Watson1996).

How do we bring out the creativity of caring and caritas consciousness into our lives and our nursing profession?

Question?

Self-Care Deficit Theory

The Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory was developed by Dorothea Orem.

“The condition that validates the existence of a requirement for nursing in an adult is the absence of the ability to maintain continuously that amount and quality of self-care which is therapeutic in sustaining life and health, in recovering from disease or injury, or in coping with their effects. With children, the condition is the inability of the parent (or guardian) to maintain continuously for the child the amount and quality of care that is therapeutic.” (Orem, 1991)

Nursing is an art through which the practitioner of nursing gives specialized assistance to persons with disabilities which makes more than ordinary assistance necessary to meet needs for self-care. The nurse also intelligently participates in the medical care the individual receives from the physician.

Nursing

Describes living things as structurally and functionally whole

It is a state that encompasses both health of the individual and groups.

Health

This includes physical, chemical, and biological factors.

It may also include family, culture and environment.

Environment

In what ways can you promote self-care to your patient?
