Trevor Wai

TDJ 3M1

Due: Nov. 25 2021

State the design problem and opportunity

Find the problem that you are trying to solve. Clearly explain and write the problem down.

Step 1

Design Brief

Write a design brief. Specify the details of the problem. You can also specify what each member of the team is working on.

Step 2

Are there any restrictions in your project?

  • Budget
  • Timeline
  • Dimensions
  • Safety

Restrictions

Requirements

Requirements

Make sure you also specify the requirements of the project. involves stating the goals of the project, and saying what would make your project successful

Research and Investigation

Step 3

Search for information on the problem. This will help you find many different solutions that you might have never thought about and help you pick the best solution.

Information to look for

Information

There might be many different types of information that you want to look for.

  • Scientific
  • Legal
  • Historical
  • Technology

visuals

You can also look for visuals like charts. They might compare multiple things, show progression over time or just give more information.

Research

Finding possible solutions

Brainstorm as many as you can. Quickly sketch and/or draw your ideas to be able to easily compare your ideas

Step 4

Select the best solution

Now, pick the best solution. There are many possible ways to find the solution. You can use as many as you can think of or want.

Step 5

Make a pros and cons list

For every possible solution, you write down what you like and don't like about them. Looking at the list will make it easier to decide.

Pros/cons

Running surveys

A good way to find a solution is to ask potential customers. They will be able to tell you what they would buy or looks the best.

Survey

Ask superiors, coworkers or your customer

Ask others

You can also ask others for their opinion. It is also likely that you have coworkers to ask or you can ask your employer for their opinion

Develop the solution

Step 6

Now develop the solution. You will need to do many things to create your solution, this will include creating a working drawing, a bill of material, specification sheets and you need to get approval.

Creating a working drawing

A working drawing is a scale drawing which serves as a guide for the constuction or manufature of something. This allows the manufacturer to easily build the product

Creating a bill of materials

Bill of

Materials

A bill of materials is a list of all the materials necessary to complete the project. It's important to know what's to know what to buy to complete the project. The total and individual costs are also shown to make sure that the project is on budget

Modeling the design

Build a graphic, mathematical, computer or physical model. The model can be a mock-up or a prototype

Step 7

Why to model the design

By modeling the design, you can imitate the real object. If it's full size you can look at it and see if it is ideal. You can also be able to test it, digitally or physically.

Why?

Test and evaluate the design

Finally, evaluate the design. You should evaluate the design based on aesthetics, ergonomics, performance, durability, cost and impacts
