What is SBELC about ?
SBELC
> SBELC stands for Standard Based English Language Curriculum for Secondary Schools.
> Developed on the basis of accessibility, quality, equity, flexibility, and do-ability.
> Based on six strands which are:
Communication, Spirituality, Attitude and values, Humanities, Personal competence, Physical development and aesthetics and Science and technology.
Four key stages :-
• Stage 1 – Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3.( Lower Primary )
• Stage 2 – Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 ( Upper Primary )
• Stage 3 – FORM 1, FORM 2 and FORM 3 ( Lower Secondary )
• Stage 4 – FORM 4 and FORM 5 ( Upper Secondary )
The SBELC is following this five guiding principles that meet challenges and demands of the 21st Century :
• Preparing for the real world
• Sustaining language use.
• Acquiring global competencies
• Acknowledging pupil differences
• Developing confident and competent communicators.

> Does not have much attention for the literature or the resulting conceptual models.
> Exam oriented curriculum.
> Language proficiency.
> The main aim is not entirely getting good grades during the examination but to use it in their daily life.
> Obtained from examining students’ work to assess the achievement of the student.
> Assessments divided into two parts which is formative assessment and summative assessment.
Formative
> To improve pupils’ learning and the quality and effectiveness of teaching strategies.
> Students will take their own responsibilities for their own learning.
Summative
> An assessment of learning carried out of evaluates pupils’ learning skill acquisition and academic.
> Helps students to investigate the world; being aware, curious and interested in learning
SBELC has four focus area that are categorized:
1. Curriculum principles.
> To meet the challenges and demands of 21st century.
> Sustaining language use
2. Curriculum Organization.
3. Curriculum Approach.
> Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, grammar and literature in Action (LiA)
4. Lesson Organization.
> Take into account that students can learn adequately by connecting the new knowledge to previous knowledge
The SBELC document encompasses the Content Standards, Learning Standards, assessment and pedagogical approach
> Cognitive Domain
> Affective Domain
> Helps students in good way in education wise and also for themselves personally
> Helps students to solve their main problem in education and also in real life
> Help to think critically and also to have creative thinking
> To understand more easily and effectively
> Helps students themselves towards the technology world
> Curriculum focused on student centered
> KSSM English, it is more on teacher-centered
> In KSSM teacher feeds the students with everything
> The new curriculum teach students how to think, solve problems, cooperation and give them more control in the classroom
> Involve them actively in the teaching and learning activities
> Enable the students to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts that is appropriate to their level of development
> Communications skills and educations level
> Enhance their knowledge on technology which is important in this 21st century learning
> Helps the students to think critically and creatively
> Helps them to learn more about the subjects
> Take a long time for the students to understand and prepare their given task
> Students whom are not interested in group activities, they might be the slow learners or some attitude problem students
> Adding different level of proficiency in the classroom
> Created activity was the teacher assigned a task
> Effective way of teaching and evaluating the students understanding level
The curriculum emphasises the teaching centred on the students and focuses more on problem-solving, project-based assignments, updating subjects or themes and implementing formative assessments
Students who needed additional guidance would continue to have access to the right assistance to ensure their success.
Teachers with high qualities and leadership will be placed at schools nationwide to ensure that the students would be developed in a holistic manner, in line with the National Education Philosophy.
