Deaf President Now

Events:

First fully organized rally occured, it inspired many students to join the movement. Some learned what it would mean for them if they had a deaf president.

Events:

Protest starts, Elizabeth Zinser is elected; not deaf and can’t sign, students wanted a deaf president to represent them

Events:

Students began to lock down school so no one could get in, they had a list of demands they put forth. 1. Zinser must resign and a deaf president selected, 2. Spilman must resign from the Board, 3. The percentage of deaf members on the Board of Trustees must be increased to at least 51%, 4. There must be no reprisals against any of the protesters

Events:

Gates were reopened, students boycotted class and attended rallies and speeches instead, student leaders by this time were Bridgetta Bourne, Jerry Covell, Greg Hlibok, and Tim Rarus. By the evening of that day the rallies were in the media and were featured on many of the national television and programs and in newspapers across the country.

Events:

Elisabeth Zinser came to Washington D.C in hopes of stopping the protest. Dr. I King Jordan, her, and the four student leaders met at a hotel for a meeting. The students tried to convince Zinser to step down but she refused. After the students continued the protests.

Events:

Protests continued while deaf students from other schools brought food and supplies to help support.

Events:

Elisabeth Zinser had resigned and I. King Jordan became the President at Gallaudet University, Although only 3 ½ of the commands were met. They all vowed not to leave for spring break until every demand was accounted for.

Events:

It was a nice day out and most rested while others continued the protest with many still helping out.

Events:

All of the demands were met and Spilman resigned, Bravin was named the next chair of the Board of Trustees, a task force would be set up to determine the best way to achieve a 51% deaf majority on the Board. They were satisfied.
