The Myth takes place in, 700-480 B.C. around the 9th century. She was born far across the ocean from Greece; Later placed her homeland as Libya. The Greeks made important contributions to philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. King Polydectes ws the ruler at the time and is also the brain behind the one that ends Medusa. Medusa is generally considered unmarried, though she did lie with Poseidon. Medusa comes from Greek mythology or as her people “Gorgons”. Child of Phorcys and Ceto (sea dities), and has sisters (Stheno and Euryale) , a trio women who share a single eye between them. Medusa(mortal) is best known for her hair made of snakes and her ability to turn anyone she looks at to stone, literally to petrify.
before v.s. after the curse
-Before Medusa was known as a terrifying monster, she was a beautiful maiden who was very kind and saintly.
- Out of her sister she was the gourgous "mortal" unlike her immortal monsteress sister and parents
- Medusa was a beautiful young woman who was a priestess for the goddess of wisdom and war, Athena.
-As the good priestess she was she vowed that she would swear her life to celibacy and servitude.
Today, Medusa story is often taken as a symbol of:
- Silencing powerful women
-Rape culture and how society tends to blame victims of rape instead of the penatrator
- the concept of femme. fatale - a dangerous yet attractive woman
- protect from and ward off the negative (modern day evil eye)
- snakes
-eyes
- divine femine energy
-Many warriors used the symbol of Medusa’s head on shields and breastplates during battle to aid them in winning.
-One day, while Medusa was praising and serving Athena, she caught eye of the god Poseidon(sea god )
-Since Poseidon took such a liking to Medusa, he charmed her and swayed her off her feet. The two were caught having a "love affair" in Athena’s temple.
-Once Athena found out about this affair, her jealousy raged and the beautiful war goddess became furious!
-She then decided to put a nasty curse on Medusa for breaking her promise of celibacy.
-This curse turned Medusa’s beautiful locks into venomous snakes and made it so that whenever someone looked at Medusa, they would turn to stone.
-In my opinion It wasn't Medsua fault of course for the raping of Posidien.
-She rejected him and out of humiliation for Athena, he assults the young loyal priestess on the steps of Athena's temple. Poseidon vanished after he was done and left Medusa vulnerable and weak.
- There are many different versions of this story if Posideien only had an affair or did sexual assult either way he was in the wrong and left Medusa to be created into a monster and be cursed for life.
-After Athena found out about Medusa and Posiden she was angry and for her breaking her promise to celibracy she put a curse on her
-She was given cracked skin, madness, and turning her hair into venomous snakes and made it so that whenever someone looked at Medusa, they would turn to stone
- This was life changing for her, and she fled her home-town andsent to a far-away island alone, so no man would ever want her.
- Medusa’s severed head eventually became a symbol that scared away evil.
- Medusa only saw men trying to kill her so she would use her new looks to protect herself
-She looked at them in fear and saw them turn to stone in front of her. She was scared of her powers and angry at the gods for cursing her.
-She took her revenge on the men that were sent to kill her. -Anybody who took one step on her island were marked now for death at the hands of the Gorgon Medusa.
- Even after being cursed, banished, and sexually assulted, it couldn't get worse...right
- Wrong, Medusa is sent out from Polydectes to be killed by Perceus with the help from Athena and Hermes
- After perces found the land that she was on he searched for her and there she was..
- Medusa was asleep and Perseus, using the reflection in Athena’s bronze shield as a guide (so as to not look directly at the Gorgons and be turned into stone), managed to cut off her head with his sickle.
- Surprise!!!
-For Medusa was pregnant at the time of her death, and when Perseus severed her head, her two unborn children, Chrysaor and Pegasus, suddenly sprang from her neck.
-The Gorgons were awoken by the noise and did their best to avenge the death of their sister, but they couldn't see or catch Perseus, for he was wearing Hades’ Cap of Invisibility and Hermes’ winged sandals. So, they went back to their secluded abode to mourn Medusa.
- These pictures show an artifact sculpture of medusa's children in her stomach and the 2nd one is her childen.
- Now that Perceus has the head of poor Medusa, what will he do with it..
- He went back to Seriphos. However, while flying over Libya, drops of Medusa’s blood fell to the ground and instantly turned into snakes; it is because of this that, to this day, Libya abounds with serpents.
- When Perseus arrived in Seriphos, he used Medusa’s head to turn Polydectes and the vicious islanders into stones; the island was well-known long after for its numerous rocks. ( untimate betryal!)
- After this, Perseus gave Medusa’s head to his benefactor Athena, as a votive gift.
- The greek Gods/ Goddess uses parts of Medusa for their own benefit, which is wrong for all the trouble she went threw
