"The Bright Lights of Sarajevo" compared to "History"
The Bright Lights of Sarajevo is written from the point of view of an onlooker to the city diring the Bosnian civil war. Sarajevo is also known to be the site of the assassination that triggered WW1.
History is a poem that reflects on the events of 9/11, written on a secluded beech during the immediate aftermarth.
There is imagery in both poems that conveys the desctuction that hes been caused.
This is an extremely powerfull direct and graphic image that conveys the tragic loss of human life.
Describing the deceased as "broken" both further emphasises the destruction and instills a sence of deeper destruction of thier legacy and memory.
"blood-dunked crusts" is an extremely graphic image which instills a harsh sence of horror in the reader.
Although not as graphic, since it is looking as the wider scene as if from a far, it is still powerfull. The idea of looking for "evidence" of life shows that the searchers are desperate fo find anything, but could also suggest that a the search couild be in vein.
This increases the implied severity of the attack.

The more promenant reaction shows that here, this event is much more powerfull and causes a greater response.
This quote shows how the conflict is causeing a disruption to everyday normal life.
"Massacred" is a partiqularly strong word that is used to convey the immorality and force of the attack.
As well as looking at the immediate destruction of a conflict, both poems take a strong interest in the societys reaction to the destruction caused
In the city of Sarajevo the conflict and destruction is normalised by the bahaviour of the citisens after dark. However, the events of 9/11 as conveyed in history are in no way normalised, and instead triger a profound set of deep thoughts for the poet.
This shows how normal things seem to be at night, which is at odds with the setting. A sence of normality and een relaxation is emphasised by describing thier gait as a "stroller's stride".
This has the effect of somewhat normalising the level of destruction in the city as although the imagery is powerful and intense, the citizens are clearly not phased by it at this time.
