The Pacific War

The Attack on Pearl Harbor

On December 7th, 1941 Japanese forces surprise attacked the United States military base in Pearl Harbor.

  • This destroyed or disabled much of the US Pacific Fleet
  • Japan wanted more freedom in Pacific
  • This attack set Japan up for future attacks
  • They wanted to finish the US quickly

Japan felt threatened by US hostilities with Japans moves in the Pacific and so Japan wanted to weaken the US and force them to surrender quickly because they felt they couldn't win a long war with America.

The Battle had very high stakes and was a key moment in the Pacific War.

  • Midway was in middle of Japan and US in Pacific
  • If Japan won they would've had easy access to Hawaii
  • US would've probably lost most carriers
  • Helped determine who won Pacific War

A loss for the US most likely would've involved heavy losses with the naval fleet. Japan could've overpowered US forces and forced us to surrender with the threat of direct bombing of West Coast and maybe even invasion.

The battle lasted from June 3rd to June 6th 1942 though the main naval battle ended on the evening on June 4th. The battle took place near Midway island. Which is right in the middle of the Pacific in between Japan and US. The battle was mostly fought with naval aircraft attacking the enemy fleet or island.

The countries involved in the battle were Japan and The United States.

Who Won and Why?

Despite Japanese advantages in quantity and quality of military, the US won because of it's own advantages.

  • US won battle
  • US also had aircraft on Midway
  • US intelligence intercepted Japanese Radio Transmissions
  • They became aware of Japanese Surprise Attack
  • Now US had element of surprise

Navy code breakers intercepted Japanese plans to attack Midway so they prepared their fleet and surprised the Japanese with the extra attacks. This is thought to be the main reason why the US won the battle.

How did it Effect the Rest of the Pacific War?

The Battle of Midway is often referred to as the turning point of the Pacific War during WWII.

  • Allies first major victory against Japan
  • Victory gave the US a break
  • Allowed for more of an offensive approach
  • Japan suffered major losses
  • Some say Japan never fully recovered
  • Boosted America's moral in servicemen

Afterwards Japan kept getting pushed off their feet until almost all of the momentum was with the US until the Japanese unconditional surrender on September 2nd, 1945.
