Edward's Syndrome

(Trisomy 18)

Symptoms

Babies born with trisomy 18 are often born very small and frail and with many physical defects. Some of the physical defects that are developed include cleft palate, slowed growth, heart, lung, kidney, and stomach defects, feeding problems, and deformed feet.

Symptoms

Cause

Most cases of trisomy 18 result from having three copies of chromosome 18 in each cell in the body instead of two. A doctor can detect it during a pregnancy ultrasound, or by taking cells from the placenta or amniotic fluid and analyzing their chromosomes.

Cause

Treatment

There is no cure or way to prevent trisomy 18, however, supportive medical care can be provided to give the child the best quality of life possible.

Frequency

About 1 in every 5,000 babies are born with trisomy 18 and are mostly female. Most babies with trisomy 18 don’t survive past the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Fifty percent of babies born with this genetic mutation survive beyond their first six days, and about twelve percent of babies survive the first year.

Society

From my sources there is one child that is said to be the oldest known individual to have trisomy 18, he is 21 years old and weighs only 55 pounds. His family says he loves music and being on the school bus with other kids. Although he is not able to speak on his own nor express in writing how he feels, his family says he makes happy noises and loves watching the Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Let’s Make a Deal. There is the Trisomy 18 foundation that allows families and individuals to share their story and can support one another through the common loss that this genetic mutation brings.
