Volunteering

Volunteering in my community plays a major role in my life. My volunteer work started off to just achieve the 40 hours needed for graduation but through my volunteering time I realized that it was much more than that and I continued volunteering even after I completed the mandatory hours. Volunteering is a way for me to give back to the community through my time. I have since volunteered in our school community with Chaplaincy at events such as Family Faith Night and Special Needs Movie Night. In the city community at marathons, community festivals, and the local library.

Volunteering in my life relates to the Zakat pillar of Islam. The Zakat pillar is that of almsgiving, the law that a person should donate 2.5% of their income. As I don’t have an income volunteering my time is my way of giving back to my community. Through my volunteer work I have been exposed to those that are less fortunate than me which made me realize how fortunate I am and how important it is to give some of my time to help those in my community.

Heritage

TOPIC 1

I was born into a family with a mother of Italian descent and a father of Scottish descent. My parents always ensured that my brother and I were aware of our background and incorporated parts of their heritage into our lives big or small. My mom and her family have kept their Italian roots by making traditional dishes, not eating meat on Christmas Eve or Good Friday but instead opting for special fish dishes. On the other hand, my dad and his family have shared and expressed their Scottish heritage with us by listening to bagpipe music and the men wearing kilts with the family tartan to special events. These moments are important to me as it helps me understand my family’s heritage.

When I was nine years old my mom planned a family vacation to Italy. While in Italy we went back to the town that my mom’s family is from and where many of her relative still live. We were immersed in the culture and language and saw the town that my mom’s parents were born in and met her cousins and family friends. This trip helped me to better understand my family roots and have a greater appreciation for it. Since this family trip was such a positive experience, four years later my parents planned a trip to Scotland so we could experience my dad’s family history. Unfortunately, my dad doesn’t have any family still in Scotland, but we still visited the town of Aberdeen that his family originates from. In Aberdeen we visited sites such as the ‘Cruickshank Botanic Gardens’. In addition to visiting Aberdeen we visited the Scottish capital of Edinburgh where we attended the Military Tattoo that had many musical performances of bagpipes as well as traditional highland dancing.

I am so grateful to my parents for showing us the countries that their families used to call home. These experiences were eye opening and taught my brother and I so much of our heritage which we couldn’t have learned anywhere else. My family trips to Italy and Scotland relates to the Hajj pillar. My experience relates to the Hajj as like the Hajj I traveled to the countries of my origins where I learned more about my heritage.
