"Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance
Transgenderism
Transgender means "cross-gender".
"Trans" is also used in the word, "Transcendentalist," which means to go outside (across) the rest of society. This might play a factor in why people choose to become transgender, because people who go beyond are generally applauded for it.
"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance
Sentinelese People
The Sentinelese People live on North Sentinel Island, and refuse to rely on today's technology and live in modern society. This is largely similar to Emerson's point-of-view in how they believe that the only wholesome thing in life is yourself and you need to value your own thoughts more than anything, even if society doesn't approve.
Deep Ecology
"Where he is, there is nature. He measures you, and all men, and all events."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Self-Reliance
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
-Henry David Thoreau,
Walden
Deep Ecologists believe in the rights of all things in nature, and believe that nature should be treated as god. This is supported by Emerson's quote in that it treats nature like god, and by Thoreau when he talks as if nature has secrets to life that everyone needs to know and live out.
Bird getting pushed out of nest
"The inquiry leads us to that source, at once the essence of genius, of virtue, and of life, which we call Spontaneity or Instinct. We denote this primary wisdom as Intuition, whilst all later teachings are tuitions. In that deep force, the last fact behind which analysis cannot go, all things find their common origin"
-Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Self-Reliance
Emerson says that you cannot fully achieve everything in life without using intuition. For example, a bird doesn't spend time to think about what happens when they throw their baby into the sky, they just chuck them out according to their instinct, and the baby now knows how to fly. This is what Emerson is pointing at, is that intuition is a secret force that we all need to use to achieve a God-like state.
"Whenever a mind is simple, and receives a divine wisdom, old things pass away,--means, teachers, texts, temples fall; it lives now, and absorbs past and future into the present hour. All things are made sacred by relation to it..."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Self-Reliance
Amish People
Amish people live in today's modern world without modern things. Examples include electricity, cell phones, internet, cars, etc. This goes hand-in-hand with Emerson's idea of living a simple life. they believe that living without distractions from things like social media and news is better for your mind, just like Emerson.
