This phase lasts until children are about 5 or 6. As a teacher, I would aid in this development by allowing my students handle books themselves. I would allow them to hold books, skim the pages, and scribble their own words and images.
This stage occurs from ages 5 to 8. Children begin to recognize the relationships betweek letters and sounds. As a teacher, I would aid in this development by giving more opportunity for recognizing and pronouncing words that students see. I would also ensure that students are writing and reading words and sounds.
This stage occurs from ages 7 to 9. Students at this level of development have a reading vocabulary of up to 3,000 words. As a teacher, I would aid in this development by allowing them to self read without assistance. I would also encourage reading and give extra time to students for scilent reading.
This stage occurs from ages 9 to 15. At this stage students begin to have a much better reading comprehinsion and a larger variety of resources. As a teacher, I would aid in this development by encouraging a variety of different literature. I would also provide many ways for students to strengthen their vocabulary.
At this stage of development readers are able to comprehend complex literature and vocabulary. As a future teacher, I would aid in this stage of development by providing students a way to dig deeper into their litteracy and readings. This could be through inquiry methods or projects.
