Let me just clarify that Elizabethan medicine was not that advanced compared to our daily medicine. NOT EVEN CLOSE. The medicine was important because of the Bionic Plague and the Tyrone Fever. To let you know how bad the medicine was, the two diseases caused death to 1/3 of the population!!!
Diseases like the Bubonic Plague spread so fast in the packed streets. It was not sanitary either, people dumped waste out the window.
The medicine back then was manly a superstitious mix of random herbs , and it had little to no effect on the patients being treated.
They cut open the infected spot and apply garlic, warm butter, and onions for the Bubonic Plague
They used rose, lavender and bay leaves to treat a headache.
A stomachache was treated with wormwood, mint and balm.
For an open cut, they poured vinegar inside the wound.
So according to Hippocrates, there are 4 humors in our bodies. If they are unbalanced, you will get sick. If you have to much of one, for example: you have too much blood, they have to use leeches to suck your blood or they use cupping .
Blood represents the heart.
Blood
Phlegm is released by our body to clean our organs, and it represents the liver.
Phlegm
Yellow Bile
This is produced by your body to digest food. It represents the gallbladder.
It is supposed to strengthen your bones and thicken your blood, and represents the spleen.
Black Bile
If you are imbalanced, you will become sick. For example, if you have too much blood, you would be hot and wet. So you would sweat and you would have a higher temperature which means you have a fever. To let that blood out, they poke a hole in your arm to let the blood run out, or they use leeches.
There were many types of doctors back then, some for the poor and some for the rich, and some for both. These doctors, even the ones for the rich, did not know what they were doing, such as putting vinegar on skin.
These doctors were for the rich, having gone to university and charge a lot for treatment. But even they would do things that are based more on religious beliefs(instead of scientific beliefs) , like wearing an amulet made of mashed up toad and dried blood inside their long dark robes. They also wear a black hat, and have a beak shaped mask. This is necessary in order not to get infected by their patients. They were known for curing things like plagues.
They were lower in rank compared to the physicians. The barbers back then did minor surgery, haircuts, bloodletting, and cupping. They all belong in one company, the Barber Surgeons.
They are 3rd in rank of all the doctors. They are just like the modern day pharmacist, and they sold anything from herbs to wine.
They did know what they were doing, and would recommend some treatments depending on the sickness.
These doctors were mainly for the poor, but they treated patients just like any doctor would.
