According to the Environment Protection Act, 1990, waste is defined as: “any substance which constitutes a scrap material or effluent or other unwanted surplus substance arising from the application of any process”.
Waste can be classified into various types like:
Biodegradable waste: These can be degraded through microbial activity. E.g.: food residue, human excreta, etc.
E-waste: Computer parts, batteries, etc.
Radioactive waste: Nuclear Waste.
Waste management is a collective activity involving segregation, collection, transportation, re-processing, recycling and disposal of various types of wastes.
Why do we need to manage waste?
We need Waste management for the following reasons:
1.to protect health, well being and environment.
2.to prevent pollution.
3.to reduce and reuse waste.
4.safe disposal of waste.
5.to create awareness among the people about the impact of waste.
6.to maintain sustainable development and Ecosystem.
7.encourage waste to energy development.
Waste management can be easily done in two ways: one is through waste reduction, and two through recycling.
Reusing and recycling of used items will also result in less production
