Description and narration are part of the rhetorical modes or modes of discourse.
They are a strategy you would use to write about a specific topic.
Although there are four common rhetorical modes: narration, description, exposition and argumentation, this time we are going to work on the first two ones.
This mode is to tell or to narrate events. Think of it as the way a story is told.
A narration can be an essay, a fairy tale, a movie, a joke, etc.
Narration have five elements: plot, setting, character, conflict and theme.
To identify each part of the narrative writing, we are going to take as an example the famous tale "Little Red Riding Hood".
The plot: It is the thread of events that occur in a story.
In Red Riding Hood, the plot is about a little girl who has to
deliver some groceries to her grandma, but along the way
she met a wolf and it brings serious consequences.
The setting: It is related to the location of the events in
time and place.
Where does Little Red Riding Hood's story take place? In a
forest, of course. And we could say that when she walks
through the forest is in the daylight.
The characters: These are the people in the story who drive
the plot, are impacted by the plot, or may even be bystanders
to the plot.
In this story, we have several character such as:
Little Red Riding Hood
The wolf
Red Riding Hood's mom and grandma
And the hunter.
The conflict: It is the problem that is being resolved. This is a moment of tension that requires resolution.
As you can remember in Little Red Riding Hood, the tension increases when the little girl arrives to her grandma's house, she talks to "her", and finally, her fake grandma eats her.
The resolution in this
story is when the hunter
comes to the cabin to
help the women out.
The theme: Although it is not mandatory in all the narrative texts, most of them include a moral. What does the writer intend the reader to understand?
What is the moral here? Not to talk to
strangers and of course,
not to trust in them or accept gifts
from them.
