Principles of Democracy

Kyla Murphy

Citizen Participation

Principle One

The images I chose show citizen participation, or the lack there of. They give a humorous way of showing how citizen participation can help society, and how non-participation can lead to consequences. Two that express this the best is "Trash Day" and "Jail Time" which show the mindset of the non-participators. One showing how some believe the simple actions counts as participation, the other shows the common theme of people complaining about the state of the government even though they didnt vote in the elections.

Independent Judiciary

Principle Two

I chose these images to show that despite the so called independent and impartial judiciary system, that is not always the case. It is a well known fact our judicial branch is imbalanced. Examples of the imbalances include gender and race. These are the most prominent, but there are several others that effect the bias of the jury. These need to be eliminated in order to have a truly independent judiciary.

Transparency

Principle Three

Democratic/government transparency gives the public a decent look into government goings on. This way itll hold the government accountable for the decisions made. A way to keep the public involved is to hold public meetings where citizens can attend and dictate. I chose these images to represent the level that the public is actually involved. Where the public could question the governments plans and motives but instead are left out.
