Verbs ending in '-er' and '-ir'

To conjugate the verbs ending in '-er' and '-ir' we need to follow the same process as we have done to conjugate the verbs ending in '-ar'. Here is the process for the verbs 'COMER' and 'VIVIR':

  • cross out the infinitve '-ER' and '-IR'
  • write the verb stem 'VIV' and 'COM'
  • add the conjugation to the verb stem, which needs to match with the subject:
  • Yo
  • ´El/ella
  • Usted
  • Nosotros/nosotras
  • Vosotros/vosotras
  • Ellos/ellas
  • Ustedes

To recap:

1. Spanish infinitives end in: '-ar', '-er' and '-ir'. (In English we have 'to speak' as infinitive)

2. There are three different conjugations with their own endings.

  • The verbs ending in '-ar' have their own set of endings.
  • The verbs ending in '-er' have their own set of endings.
  • The verbs ending in '-ir' have their own set of endings.

3. To conjugate a verb you need to remove the '-ar', '-er' and '-ir' and add the set of endings to the verb stem.

4. The verbs must match the subject of the sentence:

  • Yo hablo = I speak
  • Tú hablas = you speak

¡Vamos a trabajar! = Let's work!

5

  • Work in pairs.

  • Complete the worksheet: ‘-ar, -er and -ir conjugations’.

  • Once you have finished both tasks, you need to log into Quizlet and practise 'SER' and 'ESTAR' flashcards.

Exit slip

  • Complete the exit slip.

  • Please leave the exit slip over the teacher's table .
