Hydrogen Fuel Cell?

Introduction

“In 2009, the Chinese government launched “Ten Cities, Thousand Vehicles,” a program to stimulate electric-vehicle sales through large-scale pilots. A decade later, China is the world's battery-electric king.”

- (Bloomberg Magazine)

Fuel Cell?

What is a fuel cell?

- Union of Concerned Scientists

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles

- 2016 Toyota Mirai powered by Hydrogen

How?

Electrochemical reaction

What happens in a fuel cell is called an electrochemical reaction. It is a chemical reaction involving two chemical joined together and producing electricity as a result.

Advantages

Benefits:

Energy Efficiency

Internal combustion engines- efficiency around 25%

Power plants - 35% efficiency;

Fuel cell- 80%.

Environmental Impact

When hydrogen is used to power a fuel cell, the only by-products are water and heat—no pollutants or greenhouse gases are produced

“Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles do not need charging; instead, they require onboard hydrogen tanks

“You fuel up with hydrogen in the same way you would a gas-powered vehicle. The hydrogen is stored in carbon fibre, high-impact resistant tanks. Energy is captured every time you hit the brakes, conserving power and creating even better efficiency.”

- Toyota, Mirai

Disadvantages?

While hydrogen energy has a lot of admirable benefits, it’s not really the outright preferable, clean and cheap energy source for most governments and companies.

  • Cost - Recent estimates show that it costs about $200,000 per mile to create a core network for moving gas or liquid versions of this fuel.

  • Hydrogen has a lower density.

This means that it has to be compressed to liquid state to guarantee its effectiveness.

  • Extremely flammable

  • If enough hydrogen were to be released into the air, it could interfere with the current ozone balance that protects us from ultraviolet radiation.

  • produced by fossil fuels
