HAPPY

What Does It Mean

To Be Happy?

The Happiness Equation

H= BSP + C + VA

Video of Laughing Baby Ethan

H = BSP + C + VA

  • H = Happiness
  • BSP = Biological Set Point ( The level of happiness that is controlled by your genes.)
  • C = Conditions (Life’s conditions. Things you can not control; like your wealth and health.)
  • VA = Voluntary Actions (Things that we do, we have control over.)

H = BSP + C + VA

  • Biological Set Point (50% comes from your genes.)
  • Voluntary Actions (40% comes from your actions.)
  • Conditions (10% comes from things you can not control)

Whose Happier?

Can Money Buy Happiness

  • Research have found that being wealthy is often a powerful predictor that wealthy people spend less time doing pleasurable things and more time doing compulsory things and feeling stressed.
  • Many rich people aren’t happy more likely because they are workaholics. They are focused on money than on that things that will bring them joy.
  • Money can buy happiness if it elevates you from poverty, but beyond that the benefits are minimal.

Lasting Happiness vs Momentary Happiness

To achieve greater happiness positive psychology advocates “learnt optimism” exercise.

  • Sitting down each evening and listing 3 things that went well today.
  • Learn to feel grateful for what you have
  • Practice random acts of kindness
