Our Father
who is in Heaven
(Part 6)
Matthew 6: 9- 13 The Lord’s prayer
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name…”
When we call God as our Heavenly father it leads to few things:
1. We are co-heirs with Jesus
2. Fellow believers in Christ are our brothers and sisters
3. We respond to our Heavenly father in worship and respect
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way…
… God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
God is now our Father and Jesus is our big brother!
But can we be sure we have been received into God’s family?
Romans 8: 15- 16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.
Romans 8: 22 & 23 - we will receive glorified bodies.
Romans 8: 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.
We shall inherit what Christ has because we are part of the family!
Are we open to see God work in ways we have not experienced?
God’s eternal project is not only to reach individuals but to form a family.
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me?...”
How does a son, how does a daughter honor his/her father?
a. We honor our heavenly father by our willingness to protect the reputation
1 Samuel 2: 30 “…Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.”
Psalm 69: 9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
Psalm 69: 36 the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will dwell there.
b. We honor our Heavenly Father by our obedience to His word.
Matthew 7: 21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only He who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.
c. We honor our Heavenly Father by offering Him our best.
Malachi 1: 6 “… If I am a father, where is the honor due me?”
Malachi 1: 8 …Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?" says the LORD Almighty.
Mark 12: 43- 44 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on.”
We honour our Heavenly when we give our best that costs us.
- Romans 12: 1- 2 says to offer our bodies
- Philippians 4: 14- 18 says to offer our wealth
- Hebrews 13: 15 says to offer our praise
- Hebrews 13: 16 says to offer our good works
If we honor our Heavenly Father, we are truly His son, His daughter and He will honour us.
