Everyone at some point in their life will have a contact that they may consider a “bad boss”. Many times power and control in the workplace can be confused from the expectation of a “boss position many individuals overtake this role. This is very common in the workplace as the idea of power may cause an individual to obtain a controlling mindset. As seen in the book, “Persepolis” Satrapi outlines the position of power mistaken for control as one acquires such a position; oftentimes techniques are used to enforce conformity.
Humans have an innate reaction to treat their fear as a motivator or an incentive to obey the source of the fear. The reaction can be extremely helpful; however, this may cause some to take advantage of others, whether intentional or not. Moreover, some individuals use this nugget of psychology knowledge to their benefit and use Fear Mongering. By publicly portraying the execution of high school students, individuals were afraid to speak out against the government and kept their beliefs to themselves because of the fear of being executed for sharing their beliefs. Instead of standing up for what one believes is their personal right, many individuals merely refrained themselves for the fear of what could happen to them, when in reality their personal rights were being controlled by the government. Inducing a little bit of fear can be beneficial; however, when an individual is denied their personal rights, obedience is no longer the motivation behind the consequence.
Once control is obtained, our human psychology has a very hard time letting go of that control and often takes drastic measures to ensure that control is always there. For instance, the very things that give individuals control are things they are willing to fight and do anything for. Since absolute control was obtained over the oil in the middle east by Iran then there was an immense desire to protect it at all costs meaning eternal violence if that is what it takes. Sacrificing the benefit of the people to protect an individual's own control factor is often a mistake made by leaders. A leader should base their decisions on the benefit of the people, not the benefit of themselves and the government.
While fear motivation can be helpful, oftentimes individuals in positions of leadership overtake the opportunity and attempt to control the people they have power over by taking whatever means necessary to prove their power and induce complete fear, instead of doing the best thing for the people, greeting their own expectations and wants.
