The Screwtape Letters

Furman CCM: November 2019

Leanne Koffskey

Introduction to

The Screwtape Letters

Before we begin

Premise: A conversation through letters between two demons, Screwtape (uncle) and Wormwood (nephew), in which Screwtape is trying to advise Wormwood on how to lure his “patient” (assigned human) to hell.

"The idea wd. be to give all the psychology of temptation from the other point of view."

Materialist

and

Magician

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or magician with the same delight.” (SL, IX)

The

Road

to

Hell

“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts...” (SL, 61)

Dangers to humanity

Dangers to humanity

“Aggravate

that most useful

human characteristic, the horror and neglect of the obvious.”

(SL, 11-12)

Relativism

He doesn't think of doctrines as primarily 'true' or 'false'...

(SL, 1)

Contended Wordliness

And how disastrous for us is the continual remembrance of death

which war enforces.

One of our best weapons, contented worldliness, is rendered useless.

(SL, 24)

Judgment & Hypocrisy

Provided that any of those neighbours

sing out of tune,

or have boots that squeak,

or double chins,

or odd clothes,

the patient will quite easily believe that their religion must therefore be somehow ridiculous.

(SL, 6)

Discussion

Which danger to humanity is most prevalent

in the world around you?

Truths about God

Truths

about

God

“We want cattle

who can finally become food;

He wants servants

who can finally become sons.

We want to suck in,

He wants to give out.

We are empty and would be filled; He is full and flows over.”

(SL, 39)

Whenever

there is prayer,

there is danger of

His own

immediate action.

(SL, 17)

God

is

here

Never forget

that when we are dealing with any pleasure

in its healthy and normal and satisfying form,

we are, in a sense,

on the Enemy's ground.

(SL, 44)

God

created pleasure

All His talk about Love must really be a disguise for something else -

He must have some real motive for creating them and taking so much trouble about them.

(SL, 100)

God

loves

us
