Germany's Food

Cuisine and Food Culture

Germans love rich, hearty foods. Though each region has their own specific cuisine, many ingredients are shared. Pork is by far the most popular meat with sausage being popular as well. Vegetables such as cabbage which is used to make sauerkraut are popular, as are turnips, beets, and of course, potatoes. Alcohol is a major part of Germany's history as well. Many of the world's most popular beers come from Germany. Schnapps, a hard liquor was also invented in Germany.

1

Schweineschnitzel

The dish prepared today is schweineschnitzel which is a simple dish consisting of lightly fried pork or veal slabs. The pork or veal is beaten very thin and fried in hot oil for only a few seconds. It has origin in southwestern Germany around 1-20 AD where Roman cooking styles of quick frying blended with German staples. It is often served with lemons. Different regions may add sauces ranging from vinegar to mushroom to cream sauces.

2

Kartoffelkuchen

Kartoffelkuchen are potato cakes. They are usually made from thinly sliced or mashed potatoes. These potatoes are then fried, light or deep is dependent on the culture. In English and American cultures, potato cakes are most often made of thinly sliced, deep fried potatoes. In German cuisine, they are made from mashed potatoes fried in various shapes and sizes. They are then served alongside meat dishes or more often, soups and stews such as goulash.

Schwarzwald Kuchen

Schwarzwald Kuchen is Blackforest Cake which is a rich chocolate cake soaked in schnapps, a German liquor. This cake is traditionally layered and decorated with whipped cream frosting. As a final touch, it is topped with black forest cherries either with cherries surrounding the cake's circumference or made into a paste and filling the cake's center on the top layer. They may be further adorned with chocolate shavings.

Traditions

Tradition

One of the most popular holidays in Germany is Tag der Deutschen Einheit. It is The Day of German Unity and celebrates the merging of East and West Germany. Allerheiligen or Saint's Day celebrates all saints known and unknown and is very popular as well. Cinderella and Hansel und Gretel both originate in Germany. Weihnacten is the German name for Christmas.

Social

Germans are commonly stoic people who strive for precision and perfection in their daily lives. They often do not admit faults and rarely give compliments. Germans take privacy, structure, and punctuality very seriously.

Social Culture

Government

Germany is ruled by a democratic federal parliamentary republic. This means while a representative democracy is present, a parliament and council make decisions independent to their own powers. The Bundestag and Bundesrat are two separate political entities that create laws and council over ministers respectively. Germany has three main political leaders, the President of the Bundestag, President of the Bundesrat, and the Bundeskanzler. These leaders are President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Wolfgang Schäuble of the Bundestag and Bundesrat. Angela Merkel is the Bundeskanzler von Deutschland.

Economic Superpower

Economy

Germany's GDP was 3.7 trillion in 2017, giving it fourth largest economy in the world by GDP and the largest economy in Europe. Germany invented the Euro, the now (mostly) standard currency in Europe. Germany's economy is highly developed in social market economy.

Geography and Climate

Geography

Germany is situated in three major zones. The Northern area of Germany is in the Northern European Plain where forests and flat land are very plentiful along with many rivers and creeks. Central Germany becomes hilly and plains begin to disappear. Southern Germany moves into the Tyrols and Alps where the land becomes much more mountainous with many fertile valleys. Northwest Germany features wetlands and marshes. Germany's climate is temperate with cold winters and rainy, warm summers. Germany gets 53-77 days of sunshine usually during the summer. The rest of the year is cloudy or stormy, with transition seasons spring and autumn being particularly wet.
