Politics of the United Arab Emirates takes place in a framework of a federal, presidential, and a constitutional monarchy a federation of absolute monarchies. The United Arab Emirates UAE is a federation of seven constituent monarchies: the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. According to convention, the ruler of Abu Dhabi is the President of the United Arab Emirates and the head of state, and the ruler of Dubai is the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, the head of the government.

Most of the United Arab Emirates is a desert wasteland, with large, rolling sand dunes, as the outer reaches of the Rub' Al Khali Desert stretch into the country. The coastal areas fronting the Persian Gulf are flat, while the Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape in the northeast.

The UAE consists of seven emirates and was founded on 2 December 1971 as a federation. Six of the seven emirates Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah combined on that date. The seventh, Ras al Khaimah, joined the federation on 10 February 1972.
