BONE CLEANER

JOBS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

By Marcelle Pulleine

WHAT IS A BONE CLEANER?

The rotting meat was removed from the bones using knifes and other utensils. They were then cleaned, burned to remove fats and then they were grinded down into a powder. This powder was used in the production of fine boned china.

The bones that were used were generally sourced from deceased cattle.

WHAT IS A BONE CLEANER?

Fine china is made of 50% clay and 50% bone, the bone makes is white and it makes it translucent.

WHO COMLETED THE JOB?

Women were the prime candidates to complete this job.

The job of a bone cleaner was found useful to women who found it difficult to find a job and were unconcerned about getting their hands dirty.

WHO COMLETED THE JOB?

Not all women admired the job however in some cases, it was their only option to receiving a small income. Men were not bone cleaners as they were needed for more strenuous jobs that required considerable strength.

In the pottery factories there were no health and safety checks.

The air contained lots of floating dust which had poor effects on the workers health. They suffered from 'potters rot' or pneumoconiosis and there were dangers of arsenic and led poisoning. The work and health conditions of being a bone cleaner were horrendous.

PNEUMOCONIOSIS

Pneumoconiosis is a work related lung disease and a restrictive lung disease caused by the inhalation of dust which was constantly in the air of these factories.

WHY DID THIS JOB BECOME INTO EXISTANCE?

This job came to existence during the industrial revolution due to the idea to utilise diseased cattle. Their bones and skin could be recycled for new resources. The job of cleaning bones was promoted by women who needed a job and couldn’t work elsewhere.

Although it was a wearing job, the small pay assisted the women who were in need of financial assistance.

The production of bone china became popular in the wealthy middle class. Bone china was used at high teas and was thought to be a luxury. Therefore owning bone china became more popular and expensive.

DOES THIS JOB EXSIST IN THE MODERN WORLD?

Bone cleaning still exists today in the modern world under improved and advanced techniques.

There are regular health and safety checks on the advanced and improved ways of modern bone cleaning. In the factories, workers can safely work without danger and the risk of pneumoconiosis.

WHAT TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS HAVE IMPACTED ON THIS JOB OVERTIME?

There are no machines that have impacted this job immensely. Bones are still cleaned by hand but with the used of modern soaps and methods.

HOW ARE BONES CLEANED TODAY?

Today, all bones are cleaned in simular methods no matter their source or type. They are left to naturally decompose to help the removal of flesh on the bones. Depending on the weather and location, the decomposing cycle can take a few weeks to months. The bones decompose more effectively if kept outside by earth’s natural decomposers.

When gathering the bones it is important to use proper sanitation methods. Wearing gloves and a respiratory mask will protect you germs and from inhaling particles from dead organisms. To remove the flesh from the bones, maceration is a common and convenient method.

Maceration is the softening and breaking down of skin by prologued moisture exposure. Knifes and other utensils can also be used to scrape the remaining flesh off the bones.

After the bones are flesh free, they are cleaned and soaked with dish soap. The bones are usually kept for more than a week to soak inside a closed container. After soaking the bones for a lengthy period there is a grease that build up on the top of the water surface.

To whiten the bones, even ratios of water and hydrogen peroxide are combined in which the bones are left to soak for another week or longer. Making the bones into a powder they are then boiled and grinded down into a powder corresponding to how they were in the industrial revolution.
