Part 3 Notes: Mise En Scène

Nowadays it is used to enhance the appearance of the actors on screen and cover up blemishes.

Everyone on screen wears some amount of makeup.

Makeup becomes even more important when found in certain genres like horror and science fiction, where makeup artists are challenged to create realistic effects and fantastical characters.

Makeup works quite the same way. In early cinema, makeup was needed because actors’ faces would disappear when the film stocks were developed.

The director’s choices on costume come down to color, texture, shape, and flexibility, for even the tightness and looseness of a character’s clothing can convey meaning.

A character wearing dark sunglasses might elicit a deeper meaning for the viewer.

Similarly, the right costume can provide details of a time period or present a commentary on the characters, suggesting or revealing essential aspects of their personalities or function in the story.

Like setting, costume design and style have many important functions in the overall film.

Lighting works to guide the audience’s attention to important details or to hide particular elements from them.

Lighting is defined by its strength (hard or soft), its source (where in the frame the light comes from and enters), and by the shadows and color created.

A creative lighting design can alter a film in dramatic ways. Likewise, a good film can easily be ruined with bad lighting.

Lighting is probably the most overlooked aspect of Mise-en-scène. It is more than just flipping a switch on or off.
