The charaters include the townspeople which include the negro, cousins, old men, and others. The most prominent character is Emilys Husbands corpse, if you would even call him a person at this point.
Indirect Characterization
You could say that love is an open door, literally. With her hiding her husband in her house. One theme you could pull out is that you never know what secrets are hidden in someone.
The author sets the mood with words like hushed, sibliant voices and quick curious glances. These words put the reader on edge with the feeling that something is off in the surroundings and that soemthing is about to happen. The funeral takes place in this section which sets a somber mood.
The way that the author describes the husband's dead body is very vivid. This contributes to the story, in that, it put emphasis on how long the body had been there, as well as, giving vague details that hint at how Emily was hugging the body.
"to whom all the past is not a diminishing road but, instead, a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches,"
This is a reminder about how the past never dies. It never goes away. It is always there, just as the winter is a representation of death. The same goes for the room. Even though death literally happens inside, the memory of everything remains in the room.
The section starts out with the funeral. The people come, pay their respects, and remain nosy about the room. After they put her in the ground, the people open the door to reveal what Emily had been hiding. They find a room above the stairs that is filled with dust and must and is decked and furnished as for a bride. Inside the room they find the body of the fiance, as well as one of Emily's gray hairs on the pillow.
The author uses the literary technique of flashback. (2nd half of the 2nd paragraph)
Section five starts out in Emilys house at her funeral. The house is full of people whohave just come out of curiosity. The townspeople wait until Emily is six feet deep to crack open the hidden room that had been locked away for decades. The people go into the room and uncover the secrets Emily kept.Section five starts out in Emilys house at her funeral. The house is full of people whohave just come out of curiosity. The townspeople wait until Emily is six feet deep to crack open the hidden room that had been locked away for decades. The people go into the room and uncover the secrets Emily kept. The room is set in a bridal manner, but was left unsused. There the townspeople find the long deceased corpse of Emilys husband on the bed. Next to the corpse is a long strand of grey hair on the pillow.
The point of view is from the townspeople. We get the idea that the townspeople were extremely curious and nosy and are very interested in Miss Emily. The curiosity of the narrators opens up doors (literally).
