What is a Narrative Poem?

Definition

of an Epic

Definition

  • The word epic is derived from the Ancient Greek adjective, “epikos”, which means a poetic story
  • In literature, an epic is a long narrative poem, which is usually related to the heroic deeds of a person of an unusual courage and unparalleled bravery.
  • In order to depict this bravery and courage, the epic uses grandiose style.

What is a Narrative Poem?

  • Narrative poetry tells stories through poetic verse.
  • Like a novel or a short story, a narrative poem has plot, characters, and setting; however, these elements are told using a range of poetic techniques such as rhyme and meter.
  • Narrative poetry presents a series of events, often including action and dialogue.
  • In most cases, narrative poems have only one speaker—the narrator—who relates the entire story from beginning to end.

  • Origin: The earliest poetry was not written but spoken, recited, chanted, or sung. Poetic devices like rhythm, rhyme, and repetition made stories easier to memorize so they could be transported long distances and handed down through generations. Narrative poetry evolved from this oral tradition.

Characteristics of EPIC Literature

Characteristics of Epic Literature

There are six main elements of Epic Literature.

An Epic Hero

A Grand Hero

  • The hero is typically of unbelievable stature, appearance, and/or personality.
  • The hero is usually either partially divine or "chosen" by some higher power.
  • The hero is usually protected by or taken under the wing of a powerful god or being.
  • Hero is tasked with saving the world.

Superhuman Strength and Valor

Deeds of Superhuman Strength and Valor

The characters are often capable of accomplishing super human feats that no normal person could.

Vast Setting

  • The story is capable of (and usually does) span a wide variety of locations.
  • The locations in question can be both geographical and cosmological.
  • The story has the ability to take place across land, sea, into the underworld, or thru space or time etc.
  • Takes place in an era beyond the range of living memory.

Supernatural Forces

Gods, wizards, angels, orcs, goblins, elves, dwarves, etc. These can be found in most epic stories.

Elevation of Style

  • The writing can tend to be a bit over dramatic.
  • It is typically a bit formal or highly stylized.
  • There is a heavy use of poetry, lyricism, and exaggeration.

Omniscient Narrator

  • The story is told by a single narrator.
  • The narrator is all-knowing and all-seeing
  • The narrator tends to remain unbiased, simply relaying the information in a matter of fact way.
  • The narrator can present the story from numerous perspectives.

Similarities

  • Grandiose Setting
  • Powerful Mentor
  • Supernatural Elements
  • Hero is tasked with saving the world
  • Omniscient Narrator

In What Ways

is The Hobbit

an Epic?

Differences

  • Bilbo Baggins is not your conventional epic hero in stature or appearance
  • The story is not written in poem form. The Hobbit is instead written in your typical story form; however, it does use lyricism by including numerous songs, rhymes, and riddles throughout the tale. (no it is not a musical)
