REPUBLIC ACT NO. 6675

GENERICS ACT OF 1988

"AN ACT TO PROMOTE, REQUIRE AND ENSURE THE PRODUCTION OF AN ADEQUATE SUPPLY, DISTRIBUTION, USE AND ACCEPTANCE OF DRUGS AND MEDICINES IDENTIFIED BY THEIR GENERIC NAMES."

The Philippine Government passed the Generics Act of 1988 to ensure that inexpensive and effective drugs are made available to all Filipinos.

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS RA IS IMPORTANT TO THE PRACTICE OF PHARMACY HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES?

The law aims to supply and promote low-priced quality medicines as alternatives to the widely consumed but more expensive originator brands by requiring physicians to include in their prescriptions both the generic and brand names of the medicines.

RA 6675 assures the effectiveness and quality of a generic drugs for the safeness of the Filipino people. It highlights the scientific basis for the use drugs in order to make health professionals more aware and knowledgeable on their therapeutic efficacy.

Philippine Federation of Medical Practitioners should write the prescriptions using the generic name and if desired they can write the brand name.

Person AB who did not follow the proper labeling of all drugs and medicines shall suffer the penalty of five thousand pesos no more that ten thousand pesos and the suspension or revocation of the license to operate such drug establishment or drug outlet.

Person X has an osteoporosis and he cannot afford to buy a branded drug in a drug store but Ra 6675 helps person x to buy a cheap, safe and also efficient generic drug for his bone disease.
