John Humphrey Noyes was a strong believer in the fact that men and women should be equal. He thought it was selfish to be commited to just one person.
Noyes believed in a state of Pefectionism at conversion. All of his followers had to practice Bible Communism. Bible communism is communism as it is described in the Bible. He set up a community in Oneida to practice all of his beliefs.
Noyes set up systems known as Complex Marriage and Male Continence. Every man was married to every woman of the community and vice versa. Male continence was simply self control.
The Oneida Community lasted 30 years. It remained a succesful bible communist community the entire time. All of the views held by Noyes were upheld in the community.
Complex Marriage and Male Continence was followed in the Oneida community. Everyone practiced mutual criticism, or volunteering to be honestly evaluated by the community. The idea of mutual criticism was to allow people to know how to reach perfection.
When the Oneida Community was disbanded, the community had over $600,000 dollars.
Noyes founded Utopian communities on the ideals of communism and adultery, which is pretty extreme
He believed that his followers were called by God to seek perfection. Some members were even given the task of guarding young virgins to keep them perfect. Noyes felt that his community was given an impossible task, but he was willing to attempt to carry it out.
John wrote many books about the bettering of society. He promoted equality between men and women and he challenged may social views.
Men and women are much more equal now. Gender roles have drastically changed for the better since the 19th century. Views on marriage have also changed dramatically. John Humphrey Noyes would be proud to see these changes in society.
