Definition

Definition

  • Work being done by children, that is bad for their physical and mental health, interferes with their education, and takes away their childhood.

Why We Chose It

Why We Chose It

We are interested in the topic because we have been a part of Me to We group in the school, want to learn more about the history of child labour, and find ways the help fix the problem.

History

History

  • Machines started taking over industries, this caused more jobs to be available to make and operate the machines.

  • Factory owners used children to do this work because it didn't take a lot of strength to run the machines, and they could be paid less than adults.

Rights/Laws

In 1924:

  • Congress proposed a constitutional amendment which banned child labour.
  • UN passed the "Declaration of Rights of the Child"

In 1938:

  • "Fair Labour Standards Act" passed by Congress

In 1973:

  • The International Labour Organization made the "Minimum Age Convention"

Rights/Laws

In Canada the feral government made laws that:

  • Hazardous work can not be done by minor
  • Students can't work between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am, or during school hours

Each province can set some of their own laws like minimum wage.

In Saskatchewan it's $10.96

Problem

Problem

  • Children miss out on their childhood because they are working.
  • They don't get an education.
  • Many experience mental trauma and abuse.
  • Can lead to health problems.

Causes

Causes

There are 6 main causes of child labour.

1. Poverty

  • Children need to work to support their family.
  • Trying to end the cycle of poverty.

2. Low Aspiration

  • Parents don't believe their children can get good jobs, so they send them to work in factories.

3. Demand For Untrained Workers

  • Companies want untrained workers because they will accept a much lower pay.

4. Illiteracy

  • Many parents can not read or write so they don't value education and send their kids to work instead of school.

5. Early Marriages

  • They get married earlier, and have more kids so there are more children to make an income for the family.

6. High Cost of Education

  • Most families can't afford education and they need their children working to provide food for the family.

Solutions

Solutions

There are many solutions to end child labour.

  • One thing we did to try and help was sign an online petition.

Free Education

  • Parents would be able to send their kids to school.
  • Schools proving lunches for students.

Create Demand for Trained Workers

  • Require that companies use only trained workers, then children won't be able to work because they don't have the proper training.
  • This will also help unemployed trained adults find jobs.

Create Awareness For the Issue

  • Make people aware that the companies they are buying from are using child labour.
  • Boycott companies that use child labour to make their products.

Significance

Significance

  • In the past there were no laws and it became a problem.
  • Laws now have restrictions on working hours and wages of children.

Future Concerns

Future Concerns

If child labour continues there will be many concerns in the future.

Children Aren't Educated

  • Children who are working miss out on getting an education.
  • With out an education they won't be able to have a good career in the future.

Cycle of Poverty

  • When children grow up working in factories and then have kids, they don't have enough money to support their family, and their kids have to go work.
  • This is called the cycle of poverty and is passed on to the next generations.

Mental Heath of Children

  • Caused from abuse and bad working conditions.
  • Miss out on their childhood, won't get a normal life.

Effects on Society

Effects on Society

Child labour affects more than just the workers, it affects the whole country.

Country's Economy

  • The children who are making an extremely low income are causing the country’s economic growth to get lower each year.

Health of The Country

  • The long term health of the country is getting bad because of the large amount of children be exposed to hazardous working conditions.

Gap Between Rich and Poor

  • The rich will get richer, and poor will go deeper into poverty, causing more children to resort to working to survive.
