Saint Laura Montoya Upegui

Early Life

Laura Montoya Upegui was born on the 26th of May in 1874 in Jericó, Antioquia, Colombia. She was the second of three siblings, Juan de la Crux and Dolores Upegui. When she was only 2 years old, her father was killed while defending his country. After her father’s death, She was sent to live with her grandmother. But she began to suffer from misunderstandings and lack of attention, she left like she had been left an orphan.

Teaching Christ

When Laura was 16 her mother decided that she was capable of helping out in the family and its financial difficulties by becoming a teacher. she applied to Normale de Institutoras" of Medellín to learn how to become an elementary school teacher. She was accepted and stood out for high marks among students. She did not limit herself to educating the students, she also spread Gospel teachings and values.

Devotion in Christ

On May 14 1914, she left Medellín with four other women and headed to Dabeiba to live among the Native Indians. And Even while having to deal with a long and painful illness spending the last nine years of her life in a wheelchair, she continued to teach an example by word and writing.

Facts about Laura

She died October 21st, 1949 in Medellín, Colombia. "Today her Missionary Sisters work in 19 countries throughout America, Africa and Europe." Her feast day is October 21st, and she is the patron saint of "People suffering from racial discrimination Orphans Congregation of Missionary Sisters of Immaculate Mary and Saint Catherine of Siena".

A miracle she performed was the healing of Doctor Carlos Eduardo Restrepo who was suffering from lupus as well as kidney damage and muscular degeneration.

I think Saint Laura Montoya is a good person because she knew that treating people unfairly because of race was wrong and to help them with their struggles she taught the word of the Lord to them. So I have a positive opinion about her because of this
