Hamartia

Hamartia-a tragic flaw that causes the downfall of a hero

#1

Romeo's Downfall

1

  • Romeo's downfall in "Romeo and Juliet" was his marriage with Juliet.
  • To explain, each event could have been prevented if they didn't marry or their relationship was slowed down.
  • On lines (72 and 74 Act 3 Scene 1) Mercutio states"O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! [Draw].Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk?"
  • The evidence shows how Mercutio engages in a fight with Tybalt and then dies for Romeo, then he curses the two families.

Hubris

Hubris-excessive pride and disrespect for the natural order of things

2

Romeo's Pride?

  • Romeo shows a hubris characteristic by having pride within himself.
  • By his background of going after "fair women" and having no regards to any regulation or law of Verona even after killing Tybalt.
  • On lines (Lines 133 Act 3 Scene 1) Romeo states"This shall determine that" before killing Tybalt.
  • He wanted vengeance for his friend Mercutio despite his mindeset about being a lover not a fighter.
  • Disagarding what the laws in Verona are he kills Tybalt which leads him into his fate of getting banned.

Peripeteia-The reversal of fate that the hero experiences

F

Romeo's Free Will

  • Romeo experiences the reversal of fate is when he finds Paris by Juliet tomb, and then kills him.
  • Wasn't fate that foreshadowed Paris to be at Juliet's tomb.
  • Romeo didn't kill Paris out of fate or felt in danger.

Anagnorisis

Anagnorisis-a moment in time when hero makes an important discovery in the story

Juliet is ????

  • Romeo finds Juliet asleep in her tomb, but he thinks she is dead.
  • This event shifts the whole story in the last Act by dramatic irony.
  • On lines (85 and 87 Act 5 Scene 3) Romeo finds" For here lies Juliet" and thinks "Death, lie thou there".
  • A huge turn around especially when he suppoesed to know about Friar's plan.

Nemesis

Nemesis-a punishment that the protagonist cannot avoid, usually occurring as a result of his hubris

Romeo's Punishment

5

  • Romeo punishment or nemesis in the play was him getting banned and not knowing the plan.
  • Even though Romeo came back into Verona, he didn't talk to Friar John or wasn't able to because of the plague.
  • This connects with Fate vs Free Will by Mercutio cursing each family before his death.
  • During (Act 5 Scene 2) Friar John tells Laurence " Friar John replies that he was unable to deliver the letter because he was shut up in a quarantined house due to an outbreak of plague. "

Catharsis-feelings of pity and fear felt by the audience, for the inevitable downfall of the protagonist

  • As a reader and for many other readers, people felt sad or pity when Romeo drunk the poison to achieve ultimate dramatic irony.
  • On lines (117-118 Act 5 Scene 3) Romeo states his last words "Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on. The dashing rocks thy seasick weary bark!"
  • Romeo explains his final words as if he cannot live without her even though the readers know she is alive. Which lead to downfall of Romeo.
