Rivers and Erosion

Introduction to rivers and erosion

Introduction.

Hello, my name is Sebastian Steip. In this essay I will be discussing rivers, river erosion and other types of erosion. the definition of erosion is the gradual destruction or diminution of something.

Examples

Water

Wind

Rivers

Rivers.

A river is a large stream of fresh water. High in the mountains, snow melts and forms little streams that gather together to form a river rushing down through hills and valleys. Lower down most rivers move slowly through flatter land before reaching the sea.

Examples of different kinds of rushing water

White water(rushing water) is water that is in a river that is usually near rocks where the riverbed can not smooth out evenly.

Calm water is water in a river not usually near water falls or steep rivers.

River erosion

When a river winds it displaces rocks and dirt. The loops and curves of a slow moving river are called meanders. The fastest water on a meander is on the outer edge, gradually widening the valley. Sediment is deposited on the slow inner edge

River erosion

Other types of erosion

There are many types of erosion. I discussed some about the erosion from streams that widen them. I will discuss ice erosion, gravity induced erosion. and wind erosion.

Other types of erosion.

Ice erosion

Ice Erosion

Water expands by 9% when frozen. When ice seeps between cracks in cliffs and mountains and freezes it expands and pry's the rocks apart and over time this repeated process causes Rocks to fall down the cliff or mountain causing erosion.

Gravity induced Erosion

Gravity causes erosion in the form of avalanches and landslides.

Gravity Induced Erosion

Wind erosion

Wind erosion refers to the transportation of sand dirt and dust by wind. This usually occurs in flat, sandy areas.

Wind Erosion

Conclusion

Erosion is a natural process of shaping and changing the geographical features of the Earth. I hope you have learned something from this presentation on this process of nature.
