Project by Katerina Hoffmann

July 2019

Who was Pablo Escobar?

Who was Pablo Escobar?

Here's a place for the first part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

Born December 1, 1949, in Rionegro, Colombia, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria grew up to become the most powerful narco terrorist in the 1980's and early 90's.

Criminal Journey

Criminal Journey

Pablo Escobar started engaging in criminal activity at the age of tweleve. His first job was to steal tombstones and rub off the engravings so they could be resold. He then moved on to selling fake diplomas and smuggling stereo equipment, which evolved into stealing cars.

Due to its proximity to coca producing (coca is the plant cocaine comes from) countries such as Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, the cocaine industry in Colombia started growing. This made Escobar start getting involved in drug dealing and smuggling. In the 1970's he founded and became leader of a crime organization which was later known as the Medellín Cartel.

Pablo and the Medellín Cartel

Medellin Cartel

The Medellín Cartel was the crime organization formed by Pablo Escobar and his partners. Escobar was the leader and the brains of the organization. Not only did he gain fear and power, he also earned money. Lots of it. Some reports state that his money amounted to around $25 billion.

Robin Hood or Narco-Terrorist?

Pablo Escobar killed more than 4,000 people and had a net worth of approximately $30 million. He did many bad things during his lifetime, but to some people, the help he provided them is enough to ignore his crimes and convert him into a hero.

Perspective #1

Perspective of a Relative of a Victim from Avianca Flight 203

Here's a place for the second part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

Avianca flight 203 was bombed by Pablo Escobar in attempts to kill Cesar Gaviria Trujillo, a presidential candidate from the 1990 elections. All 107 passengers were killed due to the explosion, and 3 others were killed because of the falling debris. Gaviria was not on the flight, but one of the victims was Colombian opera singer Gerardo Arellano. His son, Federico, has just rcently been awarded compnsation by the government due to the attack on his father. According to El Pais “Federico Arellano was about to leave for school when he found his mother sobbing on the floor. The radio was on, and the announcer was naming the list of victims in the terrorism attack.” F. Arellano also said “My father was one of the first names they called out. It only hit about 11am when we arrived at the airport in Bogota,”

How was this perspective formed?

How was this perspective formed?

Federico Arellano, along with other Colombians, heard about Pablo Escobar on the radio and television. He knew about the infamous drug dealer who had murdered thousands of people, but he never expected his father to be one of them. As said in the source, it was a normal day for him, when he suddenly found his mother crying beuase his father was killed.

The loss of a parent is an event that will forever change a person's life, so naturally, his hate for Pablo Escobar was/is very big and he wanted more than anything to see him gone. Knowing someone is responsible for the death of your father and not being able to do anything about it must be one of the worst feelings in the world. Arellano said that his mom was never the same person after the death of his father, so sometimes he was left to handle everything on his own. "Pablo Esciobar ruined my life"

Perspective #2

Here's a place for the third part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

Perspective of a Resident of Barrio Pablo Escobar

Barrio Pablo Escobar, a town with approximately 15,000 residents, is a name which is blatantly ignored by the Colombian government. The residents of this "barrio" had nothing before Escobar built them housing and schools. In their eyes, Pablo Escobar is a hero and they will forever be in his debt. Wberney Zabala, president of the Community Association and former soldier, once said “He is present in our history and memory. We don’t talk about the supposed bad things about him.” This shows how the people who recieved aid from Escobar were able to overlook the bad things he did, or simply chose to ignore the truth and belive that the rumors were false.

How was this perspective formed?

Pablo Escobar took the areas of the country which were being ignored by the government and saw them as an oppurtunity to gain the support and loyalty of the masses. Zabala, after being neglected by the government must've felt eternally greatful to Escobar for providing for his community. To him and the people in his "barrio," Pablo Escobar was not a narco-terrorist, he was a Robin Hood who helped them when no one else would.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Here's a place for the fourth part of your presentation. And to the right, there are subsections for more specific detail.

In conclusion, Pablo Escobar, known as the infamous drug dealer all around the world, changed many peoples life in a good way. In my opinion, Pablo Escobar was, to put it simply, a bad person. He killed thousands of people and bribed hundreds of officials and politicians just to get what he wanted. While some people argue about the "good deeds" he did, I believe those deeds were done to gain the support of the population, not out of the goodness of his heart. Not to mention, he took advantage of the critical situation people were livig in and used it as a publicity stunt to boost his reputation.
