Rotary Phone Description

Description

The rotary phone was created in 1891 and was one of the first phones that was widely available for almost everyone to use. It is best known for having a dial with holes in it and numbers that circle around the dial and are by each hole. The phone part that you talk into sits on top of the box with the dial and is connected to the box with a wire. It is an analog phone not digital. This phone uses analog waves that are viewed as curving waves and typically use land lines.

Cell Phone Description

Description

Cell phones are the common phones that we use today. They are digital unlike rotary phones which are analog. They are hand held devices and are wireless so they can be taken anywhere. The first portable cell phone was made in 1973. Today they have become a common device that most people use almost everyday of their lives. Rotary phones used to be the most popular but now cell phones are the most popular phones used. This phone uses digital signals which are viewed as square waves.

Rotary Phone

How it Works

How it Works

To use a rotary phone you need to first pick up the receiver. After doing this the line will be activated. Since the line is activated you can now dial the number. To dial a number you put your finger in the hole that corresponds with the number and spin the dial to the stopper and let go. You then do that multiple times for the rest of the numbers. The purpose of a rotary phone was to simply call people. Even though the purpose seems pretty simple, how it works is more complicated. It works using pulses. When you turn the dial to the stopping point and let go of the dial it moves back to its original position. It will then send out pulses based on the number that you used. After using all of the numbers in the phone number it will call that number from sending the pulses. Since it is analog, the original pulses it sends are high quality.

Cell Phone

How it Works

Cell phones are used by pressing numbers that show up on your screen. All you have to do is type in the number that you want to call and then it will call that number. You can also add contacts where it saves the number and then all you have to do is press one button to call that contact. Its main use is like the rotary phone. It is mainly used to talk to others far away. It seems simple but the way it is able to do this is not as simple. When you call someone with a cell phone it sends out waves from your phone to a tower. This cell tower sends the waves to a cell tower near the person you are calling. The waves are then sent to the other persons phone so you can talk to them. Your voice is converted into digital binary and then converted back when it reaches the other persons phone. The digital signal from this phone transmits farther than the analog one can but does not have a higher sound quality.

Pros and Cons of Rotary Phones (Analog)

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Higher Quality: The analog signals usually have a high quality sound.
  • Emergency: The analog signals do not rely on cell towers. It can work when cell phones might not be working.
  • Original Information: Analog signals from the phone contain all of the information from the original wave.
  • Find and Use: If you lose your cell phone you can use a rotary phone that you are not likely to lose.

Cons

  • Affected: Analog signals can be easily affected by noise or interference.
  • Slower: The analog signal transmits slower since the whole message has to be transferred.
  • Storage: Since it is an analog signal it takes more storage to use something.
  • No Extra Features: It is simply made for only calling and receiving calls. It does not have extra things you can use it for.

Pros and Cons of Cell Phones (Digital)

Pros and Cons

Cons

  • Complex: The technology for a digital cell phone is more complex then an analog phone.
  • Quality: Since it is digital it dosn't have as good of quality as an analog phone.
  • Original Information: Digital signals do not contain all of the original information that was sent. It simplifies it to digital binary and is not the same anymore.

Pros

  • Not Easily Affected: The digital signal is not as easily affected by noise or interference since the information is in discrete bits.
  • Transmission: The transmission can continue if it is interrupted unlike an analog signal which has to be resent.
  • Quicker Transmission: The digital signals can be transmitted more quickly than analog signals.
  • Extra Features: Cell phones usually have more things you can do on them other then calling and recieving calls.
