Formative Assessment

"formative assessment encompasses a whole host of tools that provide feedback to teachers or students to help students learn more effectively" (Dixson & Worrell, 2016, p. 154)

Informal

Much informal assessment occurs during a class or group session.

The practitioner uses the evidence of the formal assessment to adjust the learning program to meet the learner’s needs.

formal

Could be written tasks, a dance performance, or recording a video. These activities have a rubric to succeed the criteria.

summative assessment

  • Provides evidence of the learner’s mastery of knowledge, skills and understandings at a point in time.
  • Reports to the learner and their parents about the learner’s achievement. It can also be regarded as a formative assessment since it indicates what they still need to learn.
  • Usually occurs at the end of a learning program, unit or semester, to help the next practitioner where the learner is on the learning continuum.
